How Star-Lord plays
Star-Lord is Tokon's premier gun zoner, and his whole identity runs through the Element Gun. Tapping Unique (5U) fires an Elemental Blast whose behaviour changes with his aligned element, and Groove Switch (direction + U) rotates him between Light, Fire, Ice and Earth on the fly. Layered on top are dedicated projectile specials — Blaster Shot (236, some sources call it 'Quad Blasters'), the Gravity Mine (623), a low-hitting Ravager Rush (214) and the Rocket Step jet-boot dash (22) — so he can wall out almost any angle and steadily drain the shared Vital Gauge with chip. What separates him from a stationary zoner is mobility: Free Flight (hold Up while grounded) plus an 8-directional aerial Multi-Dash let him float, reposition and fire from air angles grounded characters simply can't answer.
That package is strong enough that he sits at A (contested), with community opinion swinging from S to B. Optimistic lists put him top-tier for a commanding neutral most of the cast can't out-poke, while skeptics drop him to B, noting he can switch elements for big combos but has few ways to mix opponents up to establish that strength. Both reads are correct: Star-Lord dominates when he keeps the fight at his range and turns mediocre once a fast character forces him into a phone-booth where his mix-ups thin out. Treat him as a control specialist and, above all, as one of the best zoning partners FOR a rushdown point — his shots and assists buy space for the killers on his team.

Strengths
- Layered, adaptable zoning: the Element Gun's four modes (Light straight beam / Fire multi-hit fireball / Ice freeze / Earth projectile-blocking shield) plus the 236 Blaster Shot and 623 Gravity Mine give him multiple angles to wall out approaches and chip the shared Vital Gauge
- Elite aerial mobility: Free Flight (hold Up) and an 8-way Multi-Dash open air-only movement and firing angles ground characters can't replicate, making him very hard to pin down
- Commanding neutral / keepaway — strong sources argue most of the cast simply can't out-poke him at range
- Premium assist value: Shooter Assist (6A) and the element-aligned Assault Assist (4A) make him an excellent zoning assist FOR rushdown points, and he can tag-cancel on hit (5T) to swap in for a fuller combo
- Flexible answers baked into the elements: Ice threatens a freeze to start offense, Earth's shield blocks incoming projectiles, and Gravity Mine H vacuums the opponent in for setups
Weaknesses
- Range-dependent: his strength drops off sharply up close, and he has few real left/right mix-ups, so he struggles to open up patient defense once he's rushed down or cornered
- Technical to pilot: Groove Switch mode-management and air movement are the core skill expression — leaning on a single element makes his pressure predictable at high level
- Resource-hungry: Elemental Blast has limited ammo (must reload with U) and specials/supers cost Skill Gauge; starved of ammo or meter, his neutral wall thins out
- Exploitable, contested meta: fast dash-in rushdown (Magik, Spider-Man, Black Panther) can close his gaps and blow up his keepaway, which is why tier opinions swing from S to B

Star-Lord Move List
| Move | Input | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Groove Switch (element change)Mechanic | Direction + U — 8U Light / 6U Fire / 4U Ice / 2U Earth | Switches his aligned element (starts on Light). Changing element alters Elemental Blast, Elemental Outlaw and the Assault Assist. Rotating modes rather than spamming one is his core skill. |
| Elemental Blast (the Element Gun)Special | 5U · air OK (R1) · reload with U | Signature Element Gun shot; its properties change with the aligned element — Light: straight beam; Fire: multi-hit fireball; Ice: short-range spray that freezes on hit; Earth: a shield that blocks projectiles then fires. Limited ammo, reloaded by pressing U; air versions fire downward. |
| Blaster Shot (a.k.a. Quad Blasters)Special | 236 L/M/H · air OK · QS | Multi-shot special projectile and his main zoning special. Grounded fires straight ahead; aerial fires angled downward. Costs Skill Gauge. Dustloop names it 'Blaster Shot'; tokon.gg and Altar list it as 'Quad Blasters'. |
| Gravity MineSpecial | 623 L/M/H · air OK | Tosses a grenade/mine to control space and cover approaches. The H version draws the opponent in during the explosion (a vacuum), which sets up conversions. |
| Ravager RushSpecial | 214 L/M/H (low) · air j.214 L/M/H | Sliding LOW attack with follow-ups — his main close-range poke and a combo ender/knockdown tool. An aerial Ravager Rush also exists. |
| Rocket StepSpecial | 22 L/M/H | Jet-boot command dash/leap for repositioning. The H version attacks while leaping forward and can cancel into Free Flight afterward — a movement/pressure tool. |
| Elemental OutlawSuper | 236 M+H · air OK · 50 Skill Gauge | Fires a barrage of shots then a finisher whose ender depends on the currently stocked element. His meter dump to cap a combo or win a fireball war. |
| Dance OffSuper | 632146 M+H (Ultimate) · 100 Skill Gauge | Lunging Ultimate that unloads his whole arsenal. Grants 3 Elemental Blast shots (ammo) on hit, letting him immediately re-establish zoning — so it doubles as a refuel. |
| Assists & AssembleMechanic | 6A Shooter · 2A Vertical · 4A Assault · j.A Aerial · 5A Assemble Rush · 236L+A Tōkon Assemble · 5T tag-on-hit | Shooter (6A) and the element-aligned Assault Assist (4A) are the standout zoning-cover calls for a point character; tag-cancel on hit with 5T. Assemble Rush is the universal 5A call for otherwise-impossible links. |
| Free Flight & Multi-DashMovement | Free Flight: hold 8 (grounded) · Multi-Dash: 8-way aerial dash (L1 + direction) | His defining trait. Flight and the 8-directional air dash let him fire from angles the ground game can't cover and are central to both his neutral and his combo routing. |
| Normals & throwsNormal | 5L/5LL/5LLL · 5M/5MM/5MMM · 5H/5HH/5HHH · 5[H] (held, hits High) · 2L/2M/2H · j.L/j.M/j.5H/j.6H/j.2H · throw M+H | Standard magic-series chains; the auto-combo tails act as launchers, and 5[H] held is an overhead. Frame data is not published yet. |

Game plan
Star-Lord game plan
Neutral is where Star-Lord earns his money. Build a wall: stagger Blaster Shot (236) and Elemental Blast (5U) at different heights, drop a Gravity Mine (623) to deny a lane, and keep re-taking the air with Free Flight and Multi-Dash so the opponent never gets a clean read on where you'll fire from next. The core skill is Groove Switch — rotate elements instead of leaning on one. Light gives a fast straight beam for full-screen poking, Fire's multi-hit fireball pins and covers approaches, Ice threatens a freeze to start offense, and Earth's shield blocks incoming projectiles, which is your key button in the zoner mirror. Sticking to a single mode makes your pressure predictable, so cycle deliberately and reload ammo (U) only during genuine downtime.
On offense, Star-Lord is more 'convert a stray touch and reset to range' than a mix-up monster. Your ground magic series (5L > 5M > 5H) into a launcher and air series is the bread-and-butter starter, and Ravager Rush (214) hands you a low plus a knockdown ender — but you don't have deep left/right mix-ups, so favour stagger pressure, tick-throws and chip over forcing 50/50s. Where he truly shines is as an assist engine: Shooter Assist (6A) and the element-aligned Assault Assist (4A) let your point character approach behind cover, and you can tag-cancel on hit (5T) to swap in for a bigger combo. Spend 50 gauge on Elemental Outlaw (236M+H) to cap damage or blow through a fireball war; its ender changes with your stocked element.
Defensively, respect that his kit weakens up close. When rushed, prioritise escape over gambling — use Rocket Step (22) and air-dashes to buy space, call an assist to cover the retreat, and tag a fresh partner on the shared Vital Gauge rather than mashing out of pressure. Juggle two resources at once: Elemental Blast ammo (never reload mid-scramble) and Skill Gauge for specials and supers. At 100 gauge, Dance Off (632146M+H) is both a lunging Ultimate and a refuel, since it hands you three Elemental Blast shots on hit to instantly re-establish zoning. Long term, your job on most teams is to farm chip and meter from range so your rushdown point can close the round.

Team building
Best Teammates for Star-Lord
His Amazing Guardians story teammate and a premier rushdown point. Spidey thrives when Star-Lord's Blaster Shot and Shooter Assist (6A) pin the opponent and cover his web-swing approach — Star-Lord makes the space, Spider-Man converts the opening.
A top-of-most-lists close-range mix-up monster who wants exactly what Star-Lord offers: a zoner to stall neutral and an assist to make her teleport pressure safe. Gravity Mine and the Assault Assist let her get in for free, then she does the killing.
The other Amazing Guardian and a trap/setplay control character. Two space-control specialists stack chip on the shared Vital Gauge and make approaching miserable — Peni's traps plus Star-Lord's blasters wall opponents out from both layers.

Questions
Star-Lord FAQ
- Is Star-Lord good, and what tier is he?
- Yes — we rate him A (contested). He's one of the game's best pure zoners, but community placements swing from S (lists praising a commanding neutral most of the cast can't out-poke) all the way to B (lists dinging his lack of mix-ups). The truth sits in between: dominant at range, exploitable once he's forced up close.
- Is Star-Lord beginner-friendly?
- Not especially. His official Ease of Use rating marks him as one of the more technical characters (Medium — he is not one of the 5-star easy picks). Managing four elements via Groove Switch, ammo reloads and flight movement raises the skill floor, but the payoff is a very strong neutral once it clicks.
- How do you play Star-Lord?
- Keepaway. Control the screen with Element Gun blasts and Blaster Shot at staggered angles, use Free Flight and the 8-way air dash to stay mobile, and switch elements to keep pressure unpredictable. Lean on him as a zoning assist for a rushdown point, and reset to range after every touch rather than chasing mix-ups.
- What are Star-Lord's bread-and-butter combos?
- The magic-series route (5L > 5M > 5H > 2H > j.5H > j.2H > 5A > 236M+H) is the wiki's baseline BnB, and a quick poke confirm 5M > 5H > 214L gives you a knockdown to reset spacing. Exact damage isn't published yet at launch, so treat these as verified routes rather than optimised max-damage combos.
