Offline modes are playable without going online. Steam and Epic state that an internet connection and Account for PlayStation are required for the listed online features.

Online features that need the account include: Online Lobby, Room Matches / Private Rooms, Ranked Matches, Casual Matches, Player Profile, Other online features.

The business model

Why isn’t it free-to-play?

MARVEL Tōkon: Fighting Souls is a premium release in the traditional fighting game mould: you buy it once, and the entire launch roster is yours. There is no storefront gating characters behind currency, no battle pass, and no energy timer. All 20 launch fighters are playable from the moment you install, and the secret fighter is unlocked by clearing an Episode rather than by paying.

What is sold separately is post-launch content. The Year 1 Characters and Stage Pass covers four new playable characters, one new stage and a set of result-screen poses, and costs $34.99 USD on its own. That is the pattern most modern fighting games follow — a paid base game with a seasonal character roadmap — rather than the free-to-play model used by games that make their money on cosmetics.

Working out the value

Which edition actually saves you money?

The three editions stack rather than branch: Digital Deluxe is the Standard edition plus the Year 1 pass and two lobby cosmetics, and Ultimate is Digital Deluxe plus five character costumes and an animated Chromatic colour for every launch fighter.

That makes the arithmetic straightforward. Buying the Standard edition and then the Year 1 pass separately comes to $94.98 — which is $9.99 more than the $84.99 Digital Deluxe edition that already contains both. If you are reasonably sure you want the DLC characters, Deluxe is the cheaper route to them. If you are not, Standard is the honest starting point: you can add the pass later at full price and lose only that difference.

There is also a Standard-to-Ultimate upgrade at $40.00, which lands you at exactly the Ultimate list price — so buying Standard first costs you nothing if you later decide you want everything. The only thing you cannot recover cheaply is the Deluxe bundle discount.
