How Wolverine plays

Wolverine is the Unbreakable X-Men's textbook rushdown: a fast, close-range brawler who lives in your face. Official PlayStation materials build him around Berserker Rage — a state he ignites with his Unique claw moves that then juices his damage and combo extensions. He's all about sustained pressure and high damage, at the cost of taking risks to get in.

Arc System Works gives him a full 5-star ease-of-use rating, and the community widely lists him among the best beginner characters — one core loop already does big damage. Our launch tier list has him in A (contested): some early lists say S, a sign the meta is still young. The catch the game itself flags: his aggression means he takes damage, so timely tagging is part of playing him well.

Strengths

  • Relentless close-range pressure — Berserker Claw cancels on hit into Finish / Maul (overhead) / Sweep (low) for a constant high/low mix-up
  • Multiple armored approaches (Eviscerate, Feral Shred, Berserker Charge) bully through buttons and projectiles to get in
  • X-Force's opening swipe clears projectiles, so he can walk down zoners
  • Berserker Rage adds hits and damage, and his enders slam or launch for easy Wall Breaks
  • Low execution floor with fast payoff — deadly mix-up threat in the corner

Weaknesses

  • Has to be up close — a committed zoner who keeps him out shuts down most of his game
  • The game officially flags a 'health risk': his style trades life to get in, so he needs timely switching
  • Pressure is fairly linear — disciplined players can read and punish predictable approaches and assist calls
  • Reversals lean on armored specials or the 100-meter Ultimate, so being cornered on defense hurts

Game plan

Wolverine game plan

Everything Wolverine does is built on being close, so your first job every round is to close distance. On the ground, Eviscerate and Berserker Charge armor through buttons; against jump-ins, Feral Shred's aerial armor covers you. Against a zoner, lead with X-Force — its opening swipe eats projectiles so you can walk forward behind it. Because 'getting in' is his biggest weakness, the ideal approach is behind a teammate's assist.

Once you're in, the core loop is Berserker Claw into a Finish, or into Maul (overhead) / Sweep (low) for a high/low. Berserker Finish ignites Berserker Rage, which powers up your Unique moves — but using Finish again while in Rage spends and ends it, so you weave re-ignitions into your combo. Push toward the corner, where his mix-up is deadliest, and end into a slam or launch for a Wall Break.

On defense he's an offense-is-defense character with armored specials, but he lacks a cheap universal reversal, so don't gamble armored starters at low health. Respect the game's own warning: his aggression costs life, so tag him out through a raw switch or an Assemble 'Switch?' window before his health becomes a liability. Manage Skill Gauge too — command inputs build it faster than Quick Skills.

Team building

Best Teammates for Wolverine

Captain America

A shield assist that covers Wolverine's dash-in head-on, turning his risky approach into a safe one — and a stable, beginner-friendly anchor who can close rounds.

Storm

A lockdown assist that keeps the opponent pinned so Wolverine can re-approach again and again — aimed straight at his one weakness (getting in) — and his Unbreakable X-Men teammate.

Magik

Stacks even more mix-up on top of his high/low with her portals and teleports, forcing the defender to guess twice. Another Unbreakable X-Men partner.

Questions

Wolverine FAQ

Is Wolverine good, and is he good for beginners?
He's one of the best beginner picks — Arc System Works gives him a full 5-star ease-of-use rating, and his straightforward, high-reward pressure pays off fast. As a fighter he's a solid rushdown threat, though his offense is a little linear and disciplined opponents can read it. Community tier lists range from A to S; ours has him at A (contested). The game only launched on 2026-08-06, so the meta is early.
How does Berserker Rage work?
It's his core state loop. Start with Berserker Claw, cancel on hit into Berserker Finish; Finish slams the opponent and ignites Berserker Rage. While Rage is active his Unique moves add hits and deal more. The catch: using Berserker Finish again during Rage spends and ends it, so you re-ignite it as part of your combo. His Ultimate, Savage Instinct (100 Skill Gauge), also ignites Rage on hit.
He loses health fast — when should I tag out?
The official guide flags a 'health risk': his aggressive approach trades life to get in, so treat his health bar as a resource. In this 4v4 tag game, use a raw switch or the 'Switch?' window after an Assemble to rotate him out when he's low, rather than gambling armored starters at low health.
What are Wolverine's bread-and-butter combos?
A clean starter from the in-game trial is 5M > 5H > Berserker Claw > Berserker Finish (which also lights Berserker Rage). For a knockdown, a simple solo route is 5M > 2M > 2H > j.M > j.H into a wall break (~23k). Exact optimal routes are still settling this early after launch — see the Combos section and the official character guide video.
