How Doctor Doom plays

Doctor Doom is Marvel Tokon's definitive space-control anchor. He specialises in mid- to long-range combat built around projectiles: his Auric Ray beam covers huge swaths of screen, his Unique Nullify Shield (5U) plants a barrier that eats the opponent's projectiles or walls off their approach, and he can enter Free Flight by holding up to reposition his zoning angles. Around that core sit a command grab (Diplomacy), a delayed satellite laser (Merciful Smite) for setplay, and an electric close-range check (Mystic Cage) that leaves him plus on block. He hits hard up close but truly wants to sit at a distance and force the opponent to solve a screen full of hazards.

He earns his S placement primarily as one of the best assist characters in the game while still being a fully capable point. Dustloop calls his assist package elite: a forward Shooter beam (6A), a down Mystic Cage (2A) with unusually high hitstun that keeps foes grounded midscreen, and a back Merciful Smite (4A) that gives most rushdown teammates a near-free way in. Because those assists slot behind almost any point character, and because his own beam-plus-shield wall is so oppressive, he is flexible in nearly every team slot. The honest caveat: this is launch week, the meta is only days old, and no public frame data exists yet, so his exact ceiling is still being mapped.

Strengths

  • Elite zoning and anti-zoning: Auric Ray plus the Nullify Shield (5U) let him control neutral and shut down other projectile characters — the shield can absorb incoming fire while he recovers an assist, and it doubles as a ranged hit
  • Arguably the best assist toolkit in the game (Dustloop): the forward Shooter beam (6A) is a top-tier lockdown assist, the down Mystic Cage (2A) has high hitstun and keeps opponents grounded, and the back Merciful Smite (4A) covers approaches for rushdown teammates
  • His teleport-style dash can cross up in the air and on the ground, so with an assist on screen his midscreen mix-up becomes devastating
  • A tool for every range: strong close damage, steady full-screen chip, a command grab for turtles (Diplomacy), and heavy meter payoffs in Antimatter Extrapolator and Latverian Legion
  • Approachable on paper: an official 4/5 ease-of-use rating, and his normal chains auto-cancel into his specials, so beginners get functional confirms fast

Weaknesses

  • He is slow — nearly all of his normals and basic movement are slower than the rest of the cast, so faster characters can blitz past his buttons, and without assists he struggles to get going
  • Complex routing: his combo structure is more intricate than most of the cast, giving him a steeper practical curve than the friendly 4-star rating implies
  • Nullify Shield is conditional: the barrier breaks the moment it is hit by any non-projectile attack, so it answers firepower, not fists
  • Diplomacy Combo Limit: landing the command grab twice in the same combo triggers the Combo Limit, constraining his damage routes

Doctor Doom Move List

MoveInputNotes
Nullify ShieldSpecial5U · j.U · air OK · hold OK (6U places it farther)His signature Unique. Plants a barrier that blocks the opponent's projectiles or walls off their approach; it can also hit as a ranged attack, but breaks if struck by any non-projectile move. Latverian Legion powers it up (stays out longer) for the rest of the round.
Free FlightMovementHold 8 (grounded or air) · plus Step-Dash / Air DashUnrestricted air movement for a limited time — key for changing his zoning angles and for the air-dash cross-up his dash enables.
Auric RaySpecial236 L/M/H · air OK · QS · M ~25 SkillHis primary beam and main screen-control tool — covers most of the screen (M angled, H wide). His 5HHH normal chain auto-cancels into this.
Mystic CageSpecial623 L/M/H · air OK · QS · M ~25 SkillAn electric shock in front of Doom; M/H add hits and leave him able to move before the opponent even on block (plus on block). His 5MMM chain auto-cancels into it; also his down assist (2A).
DiplomacySpecial214 L/M/H · command grab · M ~25 SkillLunges, grabs and slashes; the H version teleports to approach while evading, and it can cause stage breaks. Landing it twice in one combo triggers the Combo Limit — use it once per sequence.
Merciful SmiteSpecial22 L/M/H · M ~25 SkillSummons a satellite laser that drifts toward Doom, stops, then fires after a delay (M travels away, H tracks the opponent). A strong setplay tool — time your own attacks alongside it. Also his back assist (4A).
Antimatter ExtrapolatorSuper236 M+H · air OK · 50 Skill GaugeFires a powerful blast with heavy pushback; the aerial version fires at a downward angle — a common combo cash-out.
Latverian LegionSuper632146 M+H (Ultimate) · 100 Skill GaugeBinds the opponent in magic circles then unleashes Doombots (close range hits harder; far range tracks). Afterward, Nullify Shield is powered up for the rest of the round.
Assists & AssembleMechanic6A Shooter · 2A Vertical (Mystic Cage) · 4A Assault (Merciful Smite) · j.A Aerial · 5A Assemble Rush · 236L+A Tōkon Assemble · 5T tag-on-hitHis reason for being S in any slot. The 6A beam is one of the best lockdown assists in the game; 2A keeps opponents grounded with high hitstun; the EX 4A Merciful Smite is a near-free approach tool for rushdown partners.
Normals & throwsNormal5L/5M/5H · 2L/2M/2H · j.L/j.M/j.5H/j.6H/j.2H · throw M+H (air throw j.M+H)Chains gatling L→M→H and auto-cancel into specials at the end (5MMM into Mystic Cage, 5HHH into Auric Ray), which is why beginners confirm quickly. Buttons are on the slow side, so lean on assists to make them safe.

Game plan

Doctor Doom game plan

Neutral and zoning: Doom wants to be at range, and everything flows from Auric Ray (236) and Nullify Shield (5U). Fire beams to claim horizontal space, and drop 5U to absorb the opponent's projectiles or wall off their run-in — remember it only survives against projectiles, so respect anyone who can dash through it and hit you with a body. Hold up for Free Flight to shift your beam angle and stay hard to pin down. Because his normals and walk speed are among the slowest in the cast, don't try to win footsies with buttons; win by making the ground in front of you dangerous and letting the opponent take the risk of approaching. Merciful Smite (22) is your setplay tool — lay a slow satellite laser and use its delayed detonation to cover your next action.

Offense, pressure and assists: this is where his S-tier assist package turns into a team-wide weapon. On point, chain normals (they auto-cancel into Mystic Cage or Auric Ray) and use his teleport dash to cross up, ideally with an assist on screen so the mix is real rather than a guess. Call his partners' assists to cover his slow buttons, and use Diplomacy (214) to crack turtles — just once per combo, or you hit the Combo Limit. As an assist himself, his 6A beam locks opponents down, his 2A Mystic Cage keeps them grounded, and his EX 4A Merciful Smite buys a rushdown partner a way in. Assemble Rush (5A) extends combos, and you can tag him in on hit with 5T.

Defense, tag and meter: Nullify Shield doubles as a defensive reset — place it to buy time to recover an assist or re-establish spacing. Manage the shared Vital Gauge by leaning on chip and assist coverage rather than close-range gambles his slow normals lose. On meter, Antimatter Extrapolator (236 M+H, 50) is your reliable ender and pushback tool, while Latverian Legion (632146 M+H, 100) is both a damage spike and a buff — landing it powers up Nullify Shield for the rest of the round, tightening your zoning further. Because the game is days old, treat all of this as a launch-week framework.

Team building

Best Teammates for Doctor Doom

Iron Man

The textbook double-zoner pairing. Stacking Doom's Auric Ray and Shooter beam with Iron Man's ranged fire builds a two-layer projectile wall that is miserable to approach, and Iron Man's flight and air movement give the team the escape mobility slow Doom lacks.

Storm

A high-mobility flight point who pairs with Doom on community zoning teams. Doom's oppressive assists give her room to set up — 2A Mystic Cage keeps foes grounded while she repositions — and she pays back the speed and vertical pressure Doom can't generate himself.

Magneto

His Knights of Doom storymate and a natural offensive counterpoint: a fast, mobility-heavy point who weaponises Doom's beam and shield lockdown to force his way in and open up blockers, converting Doom's space control into the rushdown the anchor lacks on his own.

Questions

Doctor Doom FAQ

Is Doctor Doom good? What tier is he?
Yes. We place him at S for launch. His zoning and anti-zoning are elite, and Dustloop rates his assist package among the best in the game — a top forward beam, a grounding down assist, and an approach-covering back assist — which makes him strong as a point and outstanding in almost any assist slot. Caveat: this is launch week, and tiers will move as the game is solved.
Is he beginner-friendly?
Fairly. His official ease-of-use rating is 4/5 (in Tokon, more stars means easier), and his normal chains auto-cancel into specials, so you get working confirms quickly and can rely on strong zoning tools. The honest asterisk: his routing is more complex than the cast and his normals and movement are slow, so his practical ceiling is higher than the star rating suggests.
How do you play Doctor Doom?
You zone. Control the screen with Auric Ray (236) beams and the Nullify Shield (5U) barrier, use Free Flight to change angles, and set up with the delayed Merciful Smite (22) laser. Call his beam/lockdown assists and use his teleport dash for cross-ups when you want to press. Since he is slow, let opponents take the risk of approaching, punish turtles with Diplomacy (214), and cash out with Antimatter Extrapolator (50) or Latverian Legion (100), which also buffs your shield.
What are his bread-and-butter combos?
The simplest verified route is the in-game trial 5M > 5H > 214L (Diplomacy) for a knockdown off a poke. His chains auto-end in specials (5MMM into Mystic Cage, 5HHH into Auric Ray), so from there you route normals into Mystic Cage/Diplomacy and finish with the Super or, with full meter, the Latverian Legion Ultimate. No public damage or frame data exists yet, so treat combo lists as launch-week starting points.
